Vapreotide

Also known as Sanvar

Vapreotide is a synthetic somatostatin analog with affinity for SSTR2 and SSTR5 receptors, studied primarily for acute esophageal variceal bleeding and for symptom control in neuroendocrine tumors. Compared with octreotide and lanreotide, it has more limited and geographically restricted regulatory approval, and it is not available in all markets. Clinical evidence is more limited than for the more widely used somatostatin analogs, so its role in practice remains narrower.

Reported benefits

  • Studied for reduction of acute variceal hemorrhage
  • Investigated for control of neuroendocrine tumor-related secretory symptoms

How it works

Vapreotide binds somatostatin receptor subtypes 2 and 5, reducing splanchnic blood flow and portal pressure while inhibiting secretion of growth hormone and various gastrointestinal hormones, similar in principle to other somatostatin analogs but with a distinct receptor-affinity profile.

Read before using

This tool produces a rough, educational estimate by scaling commonly-published research ranges to lean body mass. It is not a prescription, medical advice, or a substitute for a licensed clinician. Most peptides use fixed dosing, not weight-based dosing. Individual needs vary. You are solely responsible for how you use this information.

Common questions

What is Vapreotide used for?

Vapreotide is a synthetic somatostatin analog with affinity for SSTR2 and SSTR5 receptors, studied primarily for acute esophageal variceal bleeding and for symptom control in neuroendocrine tumors. Compared with octreotide and lanreotide, it has more limited and geographically restricted regulatory approval, and it is not available in all markets. Clinical evidence is more limited than for the more widely used somatostatin analogs, so its role in practice remains narrower. Reported benefits include studied for reduction of acute variceal hemorrhage, investigated for control of neuroendocrine tumor-related secretory symptoms.

What is a typical Vapreotide dose?

Reported ranges run 50-100 mcg. A low protocol is 50 mcg mcg/hour continuous iv infusion, as used in variceal bleeding trials, and a high protocol is 100 mcg mcg/hour in higher-intensity trial protocols. This is reference information, not a dosing recommendation.

What is the half life of Vapreotide?

Approximately 30 to 70 minutes. That is what sets the dosing frequency, and it is why the timing guidance is as directed by your clinician.

How is Vapreotide administered?

Subcutaneous: into fat, under the skin. Primarily studied as an intravenous infusion for acute esophageal variceal bleeding; subcutaneous dosing has been studied for other indications. It is not FDA-approved in the United States and has narrower regulatory approval than octreotide or lanreotide.

How long is a Vapreotide cycle?

Acute short-course therapy over days for variceal bleeding on, followed by Discontinued once bleeding is controlled off. Not typically used as a chronic, self-administered peptide.

What are the side effects of Vapreotide?

Reported side effects include gastrointestinal disturbance, hyperglycemia, injection or infusion site reactions, bradycardia, gallbladder effects with prolonged use. Evidence level for this compound is moderate evidence.
